ACLS preparation

Don't panic. Prepare.

Many people are extremely stressed when taking ACLS for the first time. With preparation ahead of time, the majority of students successfully complete the program. We have put together these tools and resources to get you ready. For an official description of the program and course objectives, please visit the Heart and Stroke course catalogue.

Step 1

Register with Heart and Stroke

Register at the Heart and Stroke Foundation website using the email you have provided us: resuscitation.heartandstroke.ca/user/register

If you have a current Heart and Stroke ID (i.e. you have a current BLS certificate), you don't need to re-register.

Step 2

Review the material and videos

Visit the ACLS Student Website. It has a number of videos you are required to watch, along with additional resources including a downloadable PDF covering supplemental basic concepts:

  • Basic airway management
  • Advanced airway management
  • ACLS core rhythms
  • Defibrillation
  • Access for medications
  • Acute coronary syndromes
  • Human, ethical, and legal dimensions of ECC and ACLS
Step 3

Complete the ACLS Self-Assessment Test

Before coming to your course, you must visit the ACLS Student Website and complete the ACLS Self-Assessment Test with a score of 70%.

Please complete this test and bring the test results to your course.

We strongly recommend the 2015 Heart and Stroke ACLS Provider Manual

Purchase directly from Heart and Stroke (under "Shop for Training Materials"). Search "ACLS" at the top right hand corner of the H&S e-store. You may also find copies of the manual on Amazon or campus bookstores.

RE5110ED2015 ACLS Provider Manual (eBook)

Your learning session will prove to be more interesting and satisfying if you read through your 2015 Provider Manual, watch the videos, and be familiar with ACLS core rhythms. This gives us more time to run through Megacode scenarios and better prepare you.

On the course date

What to expect on the day.

  • BLS is covered and you will be evaluated on your CPR skills throughout the day.
  • Core rhythms and algorithms will be reviewed, re-reviewed, and re-reviewed.
  • Lots of hands-on time practicing the skills in a team setting.
  • To be successful, you must score 84% on the multiple choice test and successfully run a 10 minute mega-code as a team leader.

Keep your certification current

Please be on time and come prepared. We follow all Heart and Stroke course guidelines. As per Heart and Stroke, BLS should be renewed every year and ACLS should be renewed every two years.
